In It’s First Model Year in America, 2018 Audi RS3 Named a 10Best

Back in 2011, we first caught wind that the Quattro GmbH division—now called Audi Sport—had developed a 350 horsepower RS3. A variant of the A3 we’re pretty fond of, it remained out of our reach until this model year. Now, we can’t help but wonder if the folks over at Audi would have given us the 2018 RS3 sooner if they’d known it would be named to Car and Driver’s 10Best list after only a handful of months on sale!

But the past is in the rear view mirror, as it were, and it’s clear that the RS3 has received the welcome it deserves. But unlike the S3—a known quantity for drivers in our part of Texas—the performance abilities of RennSport’s most formidable compact are in a class all their own.

First up is the RS3’s engine, which holds the same spirit as the Euro-only model. Instead of an iron-block 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder, a lighter weight aluminum one takes its place, while packing on the ponies. The result is a 400 horsepower, 354 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5 second path to sixty. That’s thanks in part to the unique quattro system, which unlike others, has no set torque distribution.

You read that right. While an A4 nominally will split 40 percent of its torque to the front and 60 to the rear axle in normal driving, with a maximum of 70-front and 85-rear, the RS3’s is without limit. In fact, the rear differential can take loads of up to 1,750 lb-ft of torque—just shy of five times the engine’s rated torque. So, the on-board computers send as much power aft as mechanics and the laws of physics will limit.

In spite of those insane numbers, Car and Driver found the RS3 to be capable of both wild and tame romps. For its limitless power shuffling, the quattro system gripped the road like a vice in all tests.

The exclusive 2018 RS3 may be a dream to some, but for those who want to make reality of such ambitions, our Houston, TX location has your back. We can check the availability, and help you configure your build to your tastes.
